Turbocharged engines make impressive power from relatively small displacement, but that extra performance comes with a challenge. Compressing intake air raises its temperature, and hot air is less dense than cooler air. That means the engine can receive less oxygen than it could if the compressed air were cooled before entering the cylinders. That is where the intercooler comes in. It sits between the turbocharger and the engine intake, removing heat from the compressed air before that air reaches the combustion chambers. When the system works correctly, the engine can make power more consistently while keeping intake temperatures better controlled.
